Botnets Love to Target Hosted IP Space

February 21, 2008 | Tags: Linux, Hosting

I run a hosted server at The Planet to host my websites. The Planet provides a great service for a relatively low cost of entry. The only problem is their IP space is a big target for bots. It seems like every minute, another automated attack is being carried out on my IP address. I can sit there and watch the login attempts from IP addresses all over the world. It's scary and exciting at the same time, to see people banging on your front door, trying different keys, hoping one will work.

DenyHosts is your friend here - I block IPs after 5 attempts, and it's marvelous.
